Today, I celebrate the life of my beloved sister, Surila.
You were only three years older than me, but you were my greatest protector, my confidante, and my safe place. You never let anyone hurt me, and no matter where life took us, you always found a way to stand by me whenever I needed you.
When I lost you in 1996, I was fighting my own battle with breast cancer while caring for my little daughter. Losing you at the time I needed you most changed something deep within me. I learned to become the strong person you had always been for me.
People often tell me how resilient I am, but they don't know that my strength was first nurtured by you. A part of the woman I am today was shaped by the love, courage, and fierce protectiveness of an elder sister who never stopped believing in me.
Birthdays are meant to celebrate life, and today I celebrate yours—with gratitude for every memory, every laugh, every sacrifice, and every moment of unconditional love you gave me.
You may no longer be by my side, but you will forever be a part of who I am.
