Winners and losers.

Winners and Losers
What are the two big differences you see in people? When I ask this question I get different responses like
Men and women
Dark and fair
Beautiful and ugly
Smart and dumbass
Good, bad and total a.. h….
Kind and cruel
The list would go on but surprising is the fact that I don’t usually come across my own perception of the major difference I see in people. I see them as winners and losers.
That is one of the qualities which stand out as a major difference among people according to me. I had once read a book in which I had come across a list of qualities which make a person winner or loser. I am sharing the list on my blog today. I am sorry that I cannot recall the name of the wonderful book from which I got this list.
o Winners solve problems
o Losers are dissolved by problems
o Winners take problems as challenges
o Losers as a burden
o Winners persevere despite defeat
o Losers entertain defeat
o Winners continue working while others have stopped
o Losers stop working before others
o Winners are achievers

o Losers : “I can’t”
o Winners are self-acceptant and never make comparisons with others
o Losers always compare themselves with others
o Winners work smartly hard
o Losers work blindly hard
o Winners have time to think
o Losers are lazy to think
o Winners are far sighted
o Losers are short sighted
o Winners: “What can I do for them?”
o Losers : “What can they do for me?”
o Winners transcend environment
o Losers are being controlled by environment
o Winners make thing happen
o Losers merely wait for it to happen
o Winners are non-conformists
o Losers are conformists
o Winners believe they can change, progress and improve
o Losers think they can’t change nor progress nor improve

o Losers quit too soon and too readily
o Winners see light in darkness
o Losers see only darkness

o Losers have inferiority complex and are always jealous of others
o Winners think “green”
o Losers think “red”
o Winners regard ‘man’ as the highest and greatest value
o Losers as tools to realize their goals.
I read this list at least once in a month so that I can start implementing the winning qualities in me.

Rest in Peace Paula Gerding

Rest in Peace Paula Gerding …

Easier said than done! Paula who is known to her dear cancer survivor sisters as Pee is a person who is not going to rest in peace easily because she is always busy with one or other agenda. She picks up a project out of nowhere and works on it until the target is reached. Now that she has easy access to God’s ear and has angels standing around her, I am sure she is going on take up few projects and start working on them immediately. One of them could be finding a cure for breast cancer. I know how much she hated cancer and how fiercely she fought the demon before finally falling down like a Spartan warrior.

If not for cancer, we would have never known each other. The connection between us was that we both had walked the path of breast cancer and could understand the fears, sadness and will to survive the disease brought with it. Though we had nothing in common, we bonded so well over internet and then personally too. We enjoyed our tiny brick fights to the annoyance of some people, and Paula said that meant we were true sisters.

My mind has been thinking over the time I spent with my dear friend. Even though there is pain in losing her, I cannot help but smile when I think about her. I am sharing here a Paula episode that took place when we were on Yahoo Web Cam Chat.

Once we were on yahoo chat with the webcam running in the morning a Friday morning. The children were asleep as they both had their school off and so I and Paula burnt our keyboards discussing God, faith, Cancer, bringing up kids, husbands and finally landed with weather. I told Paula that it was raining cows and elephants out there with the onset of monsoon. Naturally Paula looked out through her window and let out a weird sounding cry.

Pee : Oh my God! How did this happen?

Me: What happened? Pee, please answer me.

Pee: I am going to die

Me: Why? Is there someone lurking out there? For Chris sakes call 911 please. What? Where are you going? Don’t try anything yourself Pee. He could be stronger than you. Hey! Come back.

By then she had left the computer and rushed out. She was hysteric! That is the biggest understatement of my life. I panicked wondering what was happening when I saw her on web cam again all scared and panicked.

Pee: I just saw my cats out there near the window. They had got out through an opening and now I cannot find them.

Being an Indian I did not understand how pet cats were treated in USA. We had pet cats who went out, fought with dogs, stole milk from neighbors but came back home when they wanted to sleep choosing the exact place where we were about to sit.

Me: Why do you have to find your cats? Cats are experts in finding their way back home even from unknown places. If they have gone out they will come back.

She squealed and ran out again. She was on and off computer. I tried to calm her down but every effort went in vain. I tried my best to explain to her that cats are very smart animals. They can take care of themselves and they will sure walk in when they are hungry. Paula was very upset to even listen to me but she did not want me to log off because she was scared to deal with the situation alone.

She kept looking around and typing. I cannot recall the exact sentences because they came in torrents and were not in proper order. The message they conveyed is remembered though. “You don’t understand anything. My poor cats do not know how to defend themselves. The cruel car drivers enjoy crushing cats under their wheels. Don’t ask me why they would do it because I don’t know why but they try to catch cats under their wheels. You may not have seen raccoons. Are there raccoons in Byndoor? We have raccoons here who love eating cats. There are many poisonous snakes out there too. Debbo can tell you about the snakes in my garden. They may get them … OH GOD! What shall I do now?”

The messages she typed appeared to create some kind of conspiracy against her cats by someone unknown. All of a sudden she picked up a flash light and rushed out. She was calling out for them, waking up the entire neighborhood (yeah! She can be loud) and frightening the cats so that they hid themselves somewhere in the bushes.

She came back on computer after sometime crying. She complained I was typing blurred words and she could not read them properly. I did not try to explain to her that it was her tears which made the words blurr because she would never accept it. All of a sudden she decided to call up her daughter Kirsten. Kirsten was driving and she panicked too. Now Paula was worried about the cats and her daughter who had panicked and I was not to log off the computer because she was scared to be alone.

I sat there trying to say something but being stopped by the words “YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND”.

I may not be recalling the exact order of the events but this is how it went

Paula went hysteric all over again after trying to calm herself

She sobbed

Said a prayer

Went to potty

Sobbed

Prayed

Called Kirsten again

Went to potty

Prayed calling up on Mary to keep her cats safe

Ran out with a flash light

Sobbed

Prayed

Got angry with me for not understanding they were in danger

Sobbed

Threatened to get herself killed if anything happened to her cats.

Sob sobs sobs and more sobs.

All of a sudden she was gone. She was not on net.

I was very much worried. I logged on to the cancer support board to see if she had posted something about the lost cats there. But she was missing from the boards and there was no mail from her either. It was now my turn to get hysteric and pace around … looking at the computer and watching out for her come on. I decided to call her up. But an inner voice told me “Hey! Don’t panic. She is going to show up soon. Don’t panic. Cool down .. coooool down”. After sometime I couldn’t take it anymore. The funny thing was that exactly when Paula logged in, I logged out and grabbed the phone from the shelf. In a hurry I pulled along a jar of oil too. It came down crushing my toes and spreading out glass pieces in every possible corner you could imagine. It was tough getting rid of the oil from the floor due to the glass pieces and I had to do it quickly as my brother’s kids cannot be stopped for long. As usual Rayyan (my son) helped me gain my composure, come out of the panic mode and also cleaned up the mess. Then he logged on to the net and went to check Paula aunt’s message and there we had the message flashing at us

“THEY JUST WALKED BACK IN”

“I had lost my connection by pulling a wire out of my computer”.

HAH!!!!

I know Paula, it is useless telling you to rest in peace. I will miss you dear friend.

Save a life..... Suicide is a cry for help.

Suicide- A cry for help
Suicide, intentional, self-inflicted death.
A uniquely human act, suicide occurs in all cultures. People who attempt or complete suicide usually suffer from extreme emotional pain and distress and feel unable to cope with their problems. They are likely to suffer from mental illness, particularly severe depression, and to feel hopeless about the future.
FEW FACTS ABOUT SUICIDE.
* Hanging is the leading method of suicide worldwide
* Suicide is a cry for help
* Small minority of suicide is done on impulse
* Only 15 to 25 percent of those who kill themselves leave suicide notes.
* Three times more women attempt suicide but more men die of it.
* Suicide rates also vary between men and women and between ethnic groups. Men complete about 80 percent of all suicides. However, women attempt suicide three times as frequently as men.
.
* Lowest suicide rate is among priests and nuns.
* All suicides have three interrelated and unconscious dimensions: revenge/hate (a wish to kill), depression/hopelessness (a wish to die), and guilt (a wish to be killed).
For a person having suicidal tendencies love and care is never going to be enough because it is not enough to be loved it is the ‘if somebody who needs me’’.
The question in their mind that creates havoc is
“Is there anybody who cares, who needs me, to whom I make a difference?”
Suicide is committed when somebody loses hope.
TINA( there is no alternative)
TAAA( there are always alternatives)
DSH( deliberate self harm) is the process through which we may all go through at one time or other.
WHO ARE SUICIDE PRONE
The suicide rate varies by age group. Of all age groups, the elderly have the highest suicide rates, particularly white men over the age of 75. The increased rate of suicide among elderly people appears mostly due to the debilitating effects of physical illness, loss of social roles and relationships, and untreated depression
Suicidal behavior has numerous and complex causes. The biology of the brain, genetics, psychological traits, and social forces all can contribute to suicide. Although people commonly attribute suicide to external circumstances—such as divorce, loss of a job, or failure in school—most experts believe these events are triggers rather than causes in themselves.
The majority of people who kill themselves suffer from depression that is often undiagnosed and untreated. Because depression so often underlies suicide, studying the causes of depression can help scientists understand the causes of suicide
Research indicates that suicidal behavior runs in families, suggesting that genetic and biological factors play a role in one’s suicide risk. Among one community of Amish people in Pennsylvania, almost three-quarters of all suicides that occurred over a 100-year period were in just four families. Studies of twins reared apart provide some support for a genetic influence in suicide.
People may inherit a genetic predisposition to certain psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and alcoholism, that increase the risk of suicide. In addition, an inability to control impulsive and violent behavior may have biological roots. Research has found lower than normal levels of a substance associated with the brain chemical serotonin in people with impulsive aggressiveness.
At times it is the hostility against self
SEVERAL COMMON CHARACTERISTICS OF SUICIDES.
These include a sense of unbearable psychological pain, a sense of isolation from others, and the perception that death is the only solution to problems about which one feels hopeless and helpless. Cognitive theorists, who study how people process information, emphasize the role of inflexible thinking or tunnel vision (“life is awful, death is the only alternative”) and an inability to generate solutions to problems. According to psychologists, many suicide attempts are a symbolic cry for help, an effort to reach out and receive attention.
Single people.
Studies consistently show that although suicidal people do not appear to have greater life stress than others, they lack effective strategies to cope with stress. In addition, they are more likely than others to have had family loss and turmoil, such as the death of a family member, separation or divorce of their parents, or child abuse or neglect. The parents of those who attempt suicide have a greater frequency of mental illness and substance abuse than other parents. However, suicide occurs in all types of families, including those with little apparent turmoil.
Fluctuations in social and economic
Occasionally, people commit suicide as a form of protest against the policies of a particular government. Because depression precedes most suicides, early recognition of depression and treatment through medication and psychotherapy are important ways of preventing suicide (see Depression: Treatment). In general, suicide prevention efforts aim to identify people with the highest risk of suicide and to intervene before these individual Risk Factors
Certain aspects of a person’s life increase the likelihood that the person will attempt or complete suicide. Studies have shown that one of the best predictors of suicidal intent is hopelessness. People with a sense of hopelessness may come to perceive suicide as the only alternative to a pained existence. People with mental illnesses, substance-abuse disorders such as alcoholism or drug dependence, and behavioral disorders also have a higher risk of suicide. In fact, people suffering from diagnosable mental illnesses complete about 90 percent of all suicides. Physical illness also increases a person’s risk of suicide, especially when the illness is accompanied by depression. About one-third of adult suicide victims suffered from a physical illness at the time of their death.
Other risk factors include previous suicide attempts, a history of suicide among family members, and social isolation. People who live alone or lack close friends may not receive emotional support that would otherwise protect them from despair and irrational thinking during difficult periods of life.
SIGNS OF SUICIDAL INTENT
About 80 percent of people who complete suicide give warning signs, although the warnings may not be overt or obvious. These usually take the form of talking about suicide or a wish to die; statements about hopelessness, helplessness, or worthlessness; preoccupation with death; and references to suicide in drawings, school essays, poems, or notes. Other danger signs include sudden, dramatic, and unexplained changes in behavior and what are called “termination behaviors.” These behaviors include an interest in putting personal affairs in order and giving away prized possessions, often accompanied by statements of sadness or despair.
Most suicides can be prevented because the suicidal state of mind is usually temporary.
A person who observes these signs should ask the person in question whether he or she is thinking of suicide. If so, the observer should refer the person to a trained mental health professional to reduce the immediate risk of suicide and to treat the problems that led the person to consider suicide. Most suicides can be prevented because the suicidal state of mind is usually temporary.
SUICIDE PREVENTION PROGRAMS
In the United States, mental health professionals established the first major suicide-prevention telephone hotlines in the 1950s. Counselors or trained volunteers usually staff the hotlines around the clock. The staff members provide a listening ear to those in despair and tell callers where they can go to receive professional help. Although hotlines provide a valuable service to people in crisis, research has shown that hotlines help only those that call. Young women call more frequently than do men, who have a greater risk of suicide.
An increasing number of schools have suicide-prevention programs that train students, teachers, and school staff to recognize warning signs and tell them where to refer students at risk of suicide. These relatively new programs have not yet demonstrated their effectiveness at preventing youth suicide.
Another prevention method involves restricting access to means of killing oneself. Barriers that prevent people from jumping off bridges, for example, and restrictions on access to firearms have shown some effectiveness in reducing suicides. Such methods introduce a delay during which suicidal feelings and decisions may change or rescuers can physically intervene.
Today, with more modern views of mental illness and concern for the rights of survivors, most major religions offer compassion and traditional funeral rites in cases of suicide. No U.S. state now considers suicide a crime. Helping someone complete suicide, however, is criminally punishable in several states.

15 years and counting... Wow!

15 years ago when I walked in to the hospital to be operated upon for the removal of breast cancer tumor, I never imagined I will be blogging about it after 15 years. I did not know computers, I did not know blog and had not much hope of surviving this terrible disease back then.
Today I am grateful to God and all the people around me who have in some way or other contributed for my survival today. Yesterday, while celebrating a party for Farheena, I all of a sudden remembered it is my BC anniversary. Lately I have been living in a way that I have almost forgotten that I had once been through cancer.
I am busy getting my son into a final career oriented course, getting my daughter ready for her adult life, being focused on what I need to do for my own self actualization etc. Mere survival is not important anymore. As for me I want to finish my M.A (Psychology) and then go for PhD. The goal itself is so motivating for survival. After giving up my studies when I got married according to the wishes of my parents, I never imagined to take it up after 23 years and that too ààsuccessfully. So far my results have been very good. When I think back on the day I went for my surgery I now realize that God had better plans for me than my prayers to him.

For all those who are going through tough times, my advice is to hold and hang on to anything (even the last straw if possible) until the good tide comes over. God has much better plans for you at times than the best of your prayers.

What Does Real Beauty Mean? A Reflection.

What does real beauty mean to me?
I am glad I came across this question. It really made me think over few precious beautiful things I have in my life and be grateful to God for having given me a chance to experience beauty in different ways.
I have seen the ugliness and beauty of life with different eyes. Those of a girl who had club foot and thought everything perfect was beauty, a young woman who went through breast cancer at the age of 29 and believed she had lost her beauty fighting for her life, and a mother who tried to find a perfect word to describe her daughter who was born with special needs. All these experiences have taught me the lesson to look at life positively and watch out for the beauty which floats by in different forms.
Acceptance is the main part of being beautiful. When you accept the crow as a bird which is created to be black you can see the shine in its feathers and actually see they are pretty. It is when we try to look for a pigeon or peacock in a crow then it turns into an ugly black creature. As a child it was tough for me to accept the fact that I was different from other children, not in a better way but with a crooked foot and a prominent limp. I felt beauty was not having a club foot. It was having perfect symmetry in the body parts. As life went on I learned to accept my club foot and grew more and more comfortable dealing with it. I slowly ceased to be an ugly handicapped girl and my club foot was no more an ugly extension of my body.
When a woman goes through breast cancer and fights it, the result is usually devastating. 15 years ago, fighting cancer I felt the loss of my feminine beauty. It left me emotionally and physically scarred with the loss of one breast and effects of chemotherapy which had left me with spotted skin, weight gain and a bald head. As a child learning to speak, I always called women as people with long hair. It hurt to lose something which initially I associated with femininity.
More pain was about losing a breast while feeding my baby girl who was just eleven months old. It is not new to attach importance to cleavage and show it off. I may not have shown my cleavage off but I loved the breast as a part of my feminine personality. It was a part of my body with which I was pleased and comfortable. Surviving cancer I started feeling so incomplete, as though some parts of the puzzle were missing. Even my experience of dealing with club foot did not stop me from going into depression. Time is a great healer. With help from few good Samaritans time healed my pain. Cancer worked as a mirror showing me my true potential and my real beauty. Beauty is not being perfect but looking at imperfections perfectly in a right way and accommodating them to our lives. There is so much more in me which gives me the feminine touch. It is the compassion, emotionality, love, motherhood, care, and other inner qualities which are engraved inside of me that make me the woman I am, not just the two breasts.
Today surviving breast cancer for 15 years I can see beauty in my grey hairs, in the wrinkles which are forming slowly, which tell me that I am lucky to have them… My sister who succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 32 years saw just one or two grey hairs and did not have any wrinkles.
Being fat doesn’t matter as life has its own value. Beauty of life has been watching my kids grow up into wonderful human beings. Being alive matters!
I don’t say I go out of way to look ugly. After cancer I actually started caring a bit for my physical beauty too. I wear a prosthesis, put on a dash of makeup, carefully shampoo my hair with good mild shampoo, try to lose weight etc. They are my efforts to look pretty rather than trying to beautify myself.
Finally I arrive to the biggest challenge of my life. My daughter was born with special needs. It was tough to accept. The obsession with beauty set in again as she was growing up. What is she going to be as a woman? Will she be able to walk, talk and look beautiful? It was very tough to accept that my baby girl will never be able to walk, talk, run and live like everyone. I started to question, “What is the aim of her survival?” Slowly I have found answers for my questions. She has brought a change in me, which makes me a more beautiful and loving person. She has made me reach out to people and look deep into every individual. She gave me courage, strength and fighting spirit. She is one of the reasons why I fought cancer desperately to win my life back. She gave me motivation for living.
The beauty of her life is in her innocence. I see her getting up in the morning not worrying about anything. She makes me realize that most of my worries are created by me. They are my creations because I think of tomorrow, day after it, even years after it at times. She can be happy because it is raining, it is warm, it is cold and just because it is some weather out there. I have watched her struggle to draw a square and the elation on succeeding at drawing it imperfectly. That makes me wonder why some people worry about that one % less which would have made all the difference.
Different Forms of BeautyAccording to me there is something called beauty which is skin deep. There is no discarding that beauty. We see the pictures of beautiful women like Marilyn Monroe, Madhubala, or somebody with good features and exclaim, “Wow! What a beauty?” We respond in a different way to real people. Though at first the appearance may strike us, it takes more than just physical features to win appreciation. Again the physical beauty can vary from place to place and culture to culture. Beauty is in the eye of beholder. So if we are not talking about photographs, then beauty which is skin deep does not matter much. True beauty would beam out from the light in the eyes, a natural smile on the lips, good health, glowing skin and attitude with which a person carries him/herself regardless of age, body proportions, colour or race.
Love is a part of beauty. When you are in love with someone you find that person very beautiful (Like Mrs Cockroach finding Mr Cockroach extremely beautiful) or you can say that you fall in love with someone who is beautiful. Does everyone who has been passionately loved live up to the standards of beauty advertised by our models and stars? No way. Are the lovers living in an illusion? Does love make people beautiful? It is a mystery not to be solved by me but we can sure say there is more to beauty than that meets the eye.
Mothers find all their children beautiful. This is special beauty which is opposite of the sexual love at first sight beauty. We find all babies very beautiful which is the opposite of the sensual beauty of youth.

I would also like to add to my blog views of some special people in my life.
Duffy –To me, it's someone who is kind, who has a great sense of humour, who gives more than they take, and who makes me feel good, just by being around them. That's real beauty in a person. True beauty is simply an inner thing. It's how much you care about others and whether you can put their happiness and well-being before your own. True beauty is in the way we live our lives. I feel Mother Theresa is a perfect example of true beauty. . (I also guarantee I could never attain that level of beauty, not by a long-shot.)
Christina Tretter - Real beauty means smiling at a stranger, or showing kindness even when it is the toughest thing to do. It is looking beyond the physical and recognizing the beauty of another soul, no matter what their physique may be. It is patience and love. It is appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. It is not just losing 10 pounds - it is losing a memory that might hold anger. It is not just gaining attractiveness, rather bringing out the best of everyone around you. Beauty is shown through example. It is ignoring the tabloids and gossip. It is perpetuating the positive. When you look in the mirror, beauty is not what you see in that mirror, rather how you see yourself relating to others.
Sandy Stephens - I think real beauty comes from the inside of a person and not necessarily how they look on the outside. What's inside a person's heart and how they treat their family, friends and their fellowman is the true test of character and beauty. Beauty radiates from within. If you are happy with yourself and with the world and your heart smiles then you glow all over!!!!
Linda Gambino - Beauty is whatever YOU decide it is. It’s a personal thing.
Kathi Kolb - As an artist, I know that visually, humans are very much attracted to symmetry. But especially since becoming an 'accidental amazon,' I think asymmetry & imperfection are often what makes something or someone beautiful to behold.
Deb Rizor White - When I am surrounded with beauty I know it. It is a feeling, a warming of the heart. It can happen visually, like a perfect sunset, or a smile received.
It can happen through music, or laughter, or tears.
It can happen in a thought, a memory....
But most of all, to me beauty is in the living of everyday life when something connects you, moves you, and makes you glad to be alive. When it happens, you know it- and it's beautiful.
love is beauty- hope is beauty- peace is beauty... and all that is opposite of those is ugliness...
and now my 11 yrs. old niece Sarah says "Beauty is just the way you are. Why? Because everyone is beautiful in their own way".
Kathleen Bouthillier - Beauty is the sounding of your soul when it recognizes divinity, & senses its inherent connection to it.
